How to exfoliate your body without over-doing it
Body scrubs lift away dull surface cells so skin feels smoother and moisturiser can do its job. Done too often or too hard, though, they can leave skin dry and irritated. Here is a gentle routine.
1. Start with damp skin
Wet your skin in the shower first. Scrubbing dry skin is harsher than it needs to be.
2. Small, soft circles
Use light pressure and slow circles. You should feel a gentle polish, never stinging. Skip broken, sunburnt or irritated skin.
3. Two to three times a week
For most people that is plenty. If your skin feels tight or looks red, scrub less often.
4. Moisturise straight after
Pat dry and apply lotion or oil while skin is still slightly damp to help lock in softness.
5. Patch test first
Try any new product on a small area and wait 24 hours. Stop using it if irritation develops.
